A cup of coffee in the morning is a daily ritual for many people. Recent studies have shown that the healthy effects of coffee are overshadowed by the sugar and cream, a daily amount of which is unhealthy. However, a study published by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that drinking up to six eight-ounce cups of coffee a day reduced the risk of heart disease by 22%. So is a cup of joe healthy for you?

The study by the University of South Carolina concluded that drinking more than four cups per day was associated with an increased risk of death. The researchers studied more than 32,000 men and women from the age of 55, and it took 32 years to find an association between coffee and death. But the British Heart Foundation study found that consuming up to 25 cups a day was safe for adults. So, the amount of coffee you drink each day should not be too high if you want to enjoy its health benefits.

The caffeine content in coffee is the most common psychoactive substance in the world. According to the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, drinking three to five 8-ounce cups of coffee per day is not harmful. But if you’re pregnant or nursing, you should limit your intake to less than 200 milligrams a day. This amount is not recommended for pregnant women or for children. If you’re pregnant, then you should stick to two or three cups per day.
