The hot stone therapy is a popular form of alternative therapy massage therapy and body work whereby the placement of some of heated or even cool stones on the human body for the aim of healing, relaxation and pain relief. The stones are said to stimulate the body’s own healing capabilities by encouraging the flow of’soul’ energy from the patient’s body into the stones. The therapy can also be used on pregnant women during labour and after childbirth when the woman’s body is in a state of stress and may be susceptible to pains caused by the birth. It can also be used on people recovering from illness, injuries or surgery.

Some practitioners of hot stone therapy suggest that the therapy can be used as an alternative form of massage to help with issues such as cardiac problems, headaches, high blood pressure, poor circulation, varicose veins, asthma, fibromyalgia, cancer and heart disease. These claims have not been proven medically, but many patients have stated that they have felt better after receiving the treatment. However, it is important to note that the use of heated stones on the human body can be harmful if the wrong ones are used. Not all stones heat up to a temperature suitable for the human body. Some contain only iron that could burn the skin if heated too much.

In hot stone therapy, small smooth stones are placed on the surface of the body, such as the face, to generate heat. This heating effect helps to relax the muscles, which in turn improves circulation and stimulates healing. To receive this type of massage, it is best to have warm baths or showers prior to the treatment to make the process more comfortable. When the temperature outside is warm, it makes it more likely that the therapist will be able to use the heat generated from the rocks.
